CHEEKY SWIM by MIMI ELASHIRY

We've been counting down the days to summer, but now we're counting down the minutes too with news that Mimi Elashiry has launched her own swimwear line. A playful collection full of Elashiry's signature boho style, "Cheeky Swim" will be available exclusively in Glue Stores from October.

'Designing a swimsuit collection has been something that I have wanted to do for a while, however I did not realise how soon the opportunity would arise,' says Elashiry. 'I had some out there crazy ideas and designs, which I worked closely with the design team to work back into a capsule range suitable for the Glue Store customers and also most importantly to me and my followers.'

You can check out some of her great designs below....

KNOTTY GETS TO KNOW

This month we sat down with Melissa Penfold, one of Australia's leading authorities on style and design. Determined to make style easy, accessible and exciting to us all, Melissa honed her skills as interiors editor at Belle magazine, and as the shopping guru at the Sydney Morning Herald. She has a popular monthly decorating column in Australian House & Garden and has penned two best-selling books on the subject of Australian Style and Melissa Penfold's Little Black Book: Sydney's Shopping Secrets.

As a journalist, where did you begin your career and what made you head in the direction of interiors and style?

I was interested in style from the start. My mother and grandmother were over-the-top glamorous, with houses to match. And I saw that when people bought something new for the home they had an extra pep in their step. It gave them (and their homes) elegance and confidence. It was like magic. While at university, I did work experience with Kerry Packer at House & Garden magazine and ended up staying for more than 10 years. I did everything from styling to writing across all interior fields: bedrooms to bathrooms, kitchens to gardens, furniture to homewares. And started my annual pilgrimage to the Milan furniture fairs. By 23 I’d worked my way up to design editor at Belle magazine where I stayed until I was headhunted by Fairfax in 1996 to help set up the Domain section in Thursday’s Sydney Morning Herald, and more.

You’ve achieved so much - worked with all the major publications and written two books - what do you consider the secrets to your success?

Making good design accessible to everyone, and democratising good taste. A top designer might not be an option for all of us, but the paint colour they used can be. So can the table lamp, tiles, and cushions. My columns and books have helped everyone know where to go, what to buy, and how to be a smart shopper.

So many people look to you for advice on style and design. How would you describe your own personal style?

My style is about 70 per cent classic, and 30 per cent trends. I think that’s the best ratio for ensuring that your house (and you) are both timeless and up-to-the-minute. My homes are a mix of things from all times and places, from grand to simple. Whether it’s a cup or a commode, I buy only pieces that are well-made, do their job properly, look great, and bring pleasure to everyday living. My favourite colour combos are white, ecru, oyster, sand, straw, stone, tobacco, butterscotch, coffee and black.

In 10 years time, what would you like to be doing?

Checking out how the way we shop continues to completely transform. I don’t think we are half way there.

We’ve recently expanded our range to include more products for the home. Could you give our readers some tips on how to style a Knotty in the home?

Group your Knotty towels together in one place. It’s tidier that way, and they become extra-chic when there are lots of them. Hang them together, with an eye to aesthetics, wall to ceiling. It’s a great way of decorating if you can’t afford art. Think of a wall covered in Knotty towels. Very little money, but lots of style – and a great conversation starter. Try hanging your Knotty towels or throws on simple wall pegs, strategically place. Or hanging them on a row of iron hooks, lining them up in neat piles along open shelves, or stacking them on a chair (or stool). They will bring life to a hallway, kitchen, laundry, child’s bedroom, bathroom or pool house. Ideal for city, beach or country settings. Think Long Island or Montauk chic.

KNOTTY GETS TO KNOW

This month we were lucky enough to chat with the inspiring Elise Carver, also known as Little Bantam Surf Trainer about her unique training philosophy.
We love your refreshing approach to exercise. Have you always had an interest in health and fitness or was it inspired by your coastal move?
I have always been exposed to active living from a young age thanks to my Dad. Saying that I didn’t always embrace it and went from rock climbing and roller skating to nightclubs and drinking! When I hit 20 years old I forced myself to move back down the coast to pursue a healthier way of life and as time went on I became obsessed with being fit and healthy instead of boozed and flirty!
Your Surf Training program looks great. How it differs from other forms of training?
Surf Style Training is the very opposite from Cross Fit and Boot Camp style training. Its about working with your foundations of Core Strength, Joint Stability and Postural Strength to help you build a sustainably fit and healthy body. It’s about Strength, Balance and Harmony - looking good is just a bonus!
You seem to have a very holistic and spiritual approach to exercise. Do you believe it’s important to nurture the mind as much as the body?
Yeah for sure! If you’re not in check mentally, dealing with stress and fatigue from lack of sleep, the last thing you can do is motivate yourself! If I’m tired and just CAN’T BE BOTHERED training or surfing there’s a reason why, so I take the time to figure out that reason and deal with the cause for my lack of motivation instead of trying to do the old “push through it” method.
We see you as a great role model for teenage girls who face so much pressure these days with social media to look and be a certain way. What do you think has helped you to become the strong, confident and intelligent woman you are today?
Thank you! I wasn’t born this way, in fact for a long time I had a FALSE sense of self confidence which I realised as I got older only gets you so far. I believe I became the person I am today through countless false starts, broken hearts and rejection. After all of those, I made the choice (often encouraged by my beautiful friends and family) to get back up and try again, learning a lesson from every experience! What's that cliché saying…It’s not about avoiding the fall, it’s about what you do when you get back up. At least that’s how I remember it!
And finally, could you tell us why you love Knotty Towels?
I love how light they are and how with every use and every wash they become softer and even more absorbent! It’s epic!

FOUR WAYS TO WEAR YOUR KNOTTY

We know Knotty's make the perfect towel for travel and home but they're also perfect as a fashion accessory. Here we share four ways to style your Knotty during both summer and winter!
Wear Knotty's as a neck scarf over a dress or cotton tee in summer or with a knit and jacket in winter. Simply wrap around the neck once and then tie loosely at the front. The soft cotton and linen weaves feel beautiful against the skin.
A Knotty looks great worn as a halter dress either over your bathers or on its own! Twist two corners of the towel a few times then cross at front and tie in a knot at the back of the neck.
Did you know that wrapping your wet hair in a Knotty towel reduces frizz? So not only will you look pretty cool in your Knotty head scarf but when you take it off your hair will look great too! This look  may take a few attempts to get right. Our tip is to fold the towel five times long ways, wrap once around your entire head, then thread one end at the top and one at the base of your neck.
Knotty's are the essential travel companion because they are so compact and quick drying but they also take the stress out of what to wear on holidays. Simply wrap your towel around you as a sarong to move easily from the pool or beach to lunch or sunset cocktails.
We are having a Stocktake Sale!
Until the end of June purchase four Knotty Originals for just $100.
Simply enter code: EOFY at checkout to redeem offer.
